AUTUMN IN BARNET

CHINESE STYLE THREAD BOOK

Ink, coloured pencils and hot glue | Mulberry-leaf paper, card and ribbon
15cm x 9.25cm (closed) | 15cm x 18.5cm (open)

Inspired by Chinese folk art Zhen Xian Bao, I designed and created this gorgeous little Chinese-style thread book.

The book cover is a reproduction of the Barnet section of an original 1952 Ordnance Survey map of North West London.

The entire book (including the map and all the illustrated inserts) uses lightweight and super flexible Mulberry-leaf paper and houses thirty-one individually folded pockets. The folds, not glue, hold together all the pockets inside the book.

Thirty of those pockets contain thirty-six double-sided ink illustrations.  The illustrations depict autumn leaves, flowers, petals, nuts, mushrooms and tree fungus.

The final and largest pocket contains an embossed illustration of the mycillium network, which lives in the ground just beneath our feet and serves the mushrooms and fungi above. This illustration somewhat mirrors the Ordnance Survey map on the cover.
